Mel Barcenas isn’t old enough to drive.
She’s barely old enough to sit her GCSEs.
But the 15-year-old forward just became the youngest ever player to start a professional match in the NWSL Challenge Cup — and what she did with the ball is going viral for a reason.
Just watch this.

Barcenas plays for San Diego Wave in the US, and at just 15 years and 242 days, she stepped onto the pitch like she’d been doing it for years.
With lightning footwork and total composure, she danced through the middle of the park, sent defenders the wrong way, and nearly pulled off the assist of the tournament.
“You see why she’s making her first professional start,” said the commentator — and we couldn’t agree more.
Fans are calling her the future of US football. But based on this, she’s already arrived.
How to Move Like Mel: 3 Footwork Tips to Steal
If you’re looking to recreate that confidence and control on the pitch, here’s what to focus on in your own training:
1. Use your whole body to sell the move
Mel’s not out there doing stepovers for the sake of it. A drop of the shoulder, a shift in weight — that’s enough to throw defenders off. Practise subtle feints that actually change direction, not just look flashy.
2. Keep your head up when dribbling
She’s scanning constantly — not just focused on her feet. That awareness is what lets her pick the right pass or glide into space. Use small-sided games to build this habit under pressure.
3. Practise quick changes of pace
Mel slows down to draw the defender in, then bursts away. It’s not all about being the fastest — it’s about when you go. Add stop-start sprints and tight dribbling drills to your sessions.
